Tell Congress: Protect the Great Lakes in 2026

People stroll and picnic by the lakefront, with a boat and lighthouse in the background.

2026 is a critical year for the Great Lakes in Washington, D.C.

  • Unless Congress acts, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative will lapse, jeopardizing efforts in all 8 Great Lakes states to clean up toxic hot spots, restore wildlife habitat, reduce harmful algal blooms, and control invasive species.
  • Essential drinking water, stormwater, and wastewater infrastructure programs must be reauthorized and funded, with priority given to the communities most in need.
  • A series of barriers to stop invasive carp from entering the Great Lakes requires funding for the next phase of construction.
  • Congress has an important role to play in reducing polluted runoff from farms and stopping plastic pollution from entering our waters.

And Congress must ensure that federal agencies support scientific research, retain staff necessary to maintain long-term program integrity, and protect our waters through effective regulation and enforcement.
